YOUNG BULL OF THE PAMPAS

Leyendo una pelea estúpida y sin sentido entre argentinos y chilenos en el blog hablemos de tenis, encontré un link que alguien colgó y es realmente interesante(lo único de la extensa diatriba). Es una nota de "Tennis.com" prolongación virtual de la prestigiosa "Tennis Magazine" donde se eligen los cuarenta mejores tenistas de la historia. Entre esa elite podemos encontrar a Gabriela Beatriz Sabatino(40) y a Guillermo Vilas(24), pero lo más atrayente de esta selección es la reseña que se hace sobre el marplatense, con algunos conceptos(aunque tocados superficialmente) muy elogiosos y hasta polémicos. Esta es la nota de James Martin:

You might assume that Argentina has always been a powerhouse in men’s tennis. After all, the country has five players in the Top 30. But they didn’t put Argentina on the map. The man who gets that credit emerged from the decade of disco; he was a burly, headbanded poet named Guillermo Vilas, who went on to become a clay-courter for the ages.
Noted for his strength and endurance, the “Young Bull of the Pampas” wore down his opponents with long, loopy ground strokes that turned matches into wars of attrition. (How Vilas generated so much topspin with a wood racquet is a question best left to physicists.)
Vilas employed this grueling strategy to compile one of the most dominating seasons in history. In 1977, he won 145 matches, 17 of 33 tournaments, including Roland Garros and the U.S. Open, and strung together a 50-match win streak, still the men’s Open era record. The fact that Vilas finished No. 2 behind Jimmy Connors, who didn’t win a major that year, was a rankings travesty of the highest order.
But there was never any question about who was No. 1 among fans. After winning the ’77 Open, spectators stormed the court at Forest Hills and carried Vilas on a joyous victory lap. Vilas invariably captured the heart of the crowd, even as he ground opponents into dust. – JAMES MARTIN

Algunos puntos a destacar:
- El país tuvo 5 jugadores entre los 30 mejores. Pero Vilas puso a Argentina en el mapa.
- Cómo Vilas pudo generear tantos topspin con una raqueta de madera es algo que mejor dejárselo a los físicos.
-Vilas usó esta estrategia de trabajo duro para compilar una de las más dominantes temporadas en la historia.
- En 1977 ganó 145 partidos, 17 de 33 torneos, incluido Roland Garros y el U.S OPEN y una cadena de 50 encuentros seguidos. El hecho es que Vilas finalizó Número 2 abajo de Jimmy Connors, quién no habia ganado ningún GS ese año, fue la más grande parodia del ranking.
- Vilas invariablemente capturó el corazón del público, de la misma forma que molió a sus oponentes en polvo.
